SPIN JOINS SHARE THE CARE

After decades of lifesaving innovations aimed at reducing the number of pets euthanized in shelters, animal welfare leaders are concerned that shelters are once again filling up. By being proactive and working collectively, however, we can take action to stop this impending crisis in its tracks. Join SPIN and Share the Care to help save pets’ lives today!

During the pandemic, people sought furry companionship in record numbers. Though many worried these pets would be returned post-pandemic, that has not occurred. Instead, intake numbers remain lower than before. Even so, the pace of adoptions has dropped, so that more animals have been entering shelters than leaving over the past 18 months, according to national database Shelter Animals Count. And it means dogs and cats that do enter the shelter system have nowhere to go. Pets are staying in shelters twice as long as they did in 2021.

How You Can Help Cats and Dogs

  • Adopt a cat or a dog
  • Foster adoptable cats and/or dogs in your home
  • Make a donation to a local rescue shelter
  • Share adoptable pet profiles in your social media

Other Ways to Share the Care

  • Adopt a shelter and promote adoption to your friends and family
  • Spay and neuter your pets
  • Use ID tags and microchips to help reunite with lost pets quickly

The Share the Care initiative recognizes that everyone has a part to play in saving the lives of dogs and cats. Public shelters provide a safe haven for found and unwanted pets; private shelters and rescues alleviate overcrowding, take on special cases, and help pets stay with their families; and community members are needed to adopt homeless animals and follow through on spaying or neutering any pets they’ve acquired through other sources.
